Oliver Gaiger: THEORIES OF THE ABSURD
Oliver Gaiger
Theories of the Absurd
14 June - 13 July 2025
My work is often an attempt to capture the transient drifting state of things (with hopefully a touch of humor) to reflect life back towards us, to suggest a smidgen of its essence and to emphasize the absurdity of it all.
Oliver thoughtfully assembles shapes, motifs and colour from varied origins to create cohesive compositions which mirror the complexity, fragility and incongruity of the world around us. Connections, disconnections and pathways appear in his work which address moments in time and reflect our place in the world. His paintings offers a glimpse of the profound which elicit an innate human connection. The patterns and forms from nature and the manmade in his immediate surrounding of the Welsh countryside, together with his travels through the varying countries and cultures of his upbringing, all shape his work. Oliver Gaiger was born in Uganda and throughout his childhood lived in Sudan, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, the Falkland Islands and Cornwall.
Influenced by artists such as William Scott, Victor Pasmore, and Cy Twombly, his work draws clear parallels with artists such as Patrick Heron, Alexander Calder and Welsh painter Roger Cecil.
Oliver’s work can be found in numerous private collections in the UK and USA. His illustrations have been published by clients such as Oxford University Press, the National Theatre and VSO, and his artwork have also appeared on film sets such as ‘A Private War’, and ‘The Intern’.
This exhibition consists of approximately 25 new paintings and Own Art / Ein Celf is available for purchasing work.
