Mary Lloyd Jones @ 90
A celebration of Mary Lloyd Jones @ 90
Dathliad Mary Lloyd Jones yn 90 oed
7 Medi / September - 6 Hydref / October 2024
"My aim is that my work should reflect my identity, my relationship with the land, an awareness of history, and the treasure of our literary and oral traditions. I search for devices that will enable me to create multilayered works."
“Fy nod yw y dylai fy ngwaith adlewyrchu fy hunaniaeth, fy mherthynas â'r tir, ymwybyddiaeth o hanes, a thrysor ein traddodiadau llenyddol a llafar. Rwy'n chwilio am ddyfeisiau a fydd yn fy ngalluogi i greu gweithiau amlhaenog.”

Inspired by the landscape she worked on as a young girl with her parents, Mary's work is a celebration of the rural environment and her roots. Her work expresses her deep connection to Wales and the idea of cynefin; a sense of belonging and attachment to a particular place. This sense of place is further strengthened by her own Welsh-language cultural inheritance.
She is a painter who uses abstraction to explore landscape, culture, history and identity. Her use of early alphabets, specifically the bardic alphabet of the 18th Century Welsh Bard, Iolo Morganwg 'Coelbren', and Ogham script is a reference to the otherness of Welshness. Prominent features in her work are the traces and scars left by our ancestors and of industry.
Mary is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College, Carmarthen and the University of Aberystwyth. She also holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Wales, Cardiff, and is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. Over the years she has worked as an artist-in-residence in Scotland, Ireland, United States, India, Italy, Spain and France. Her work can be found in numerous public and private collection including the National Museum and Galleries of Wales and the National Library of Wales.
The vibrant, energetic and colourful works in this exhibition celebrate Mary's career in painting. Now in her 9th decade she is truly the custodian of her cultural heritage.
Mae hi'n baentiwr sy'n defnyddio haniaethu i archwilio tirwedd, diwylliant, hanes a hunaniaeth. Mae ei defnydd o'r wyddor gynnar, yn benodol gwyddor farddol y 'Coelbren' gan y bardd o'r 18fed ganrif, Iolo Morgannwg, a sgript Ogham, yn gyfeiriad at aralledd Cymreictod. Nodweddion amlwg yn ei gwaith yw'r olion a'r creithiau a adawyd gan ein hynafiaid a diwydiant.
Mae Mary yn Gymrawd er Anrhydedd o Goleg y Drindod, Caerfyrddin a Phrifysgol Aberystwyth. Mae ganddi hefyd Ddoethuriaeth er Anrhydedd o Brifysgol Cymru, Caerdydd, ac mae'n Gymrawd Cymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru. Dros y blynyddoedd, mae wedi gweithio fel artist preswyl yn yr Alban, Iwerddon, yr Unol Daleithiau, India, yr Eidal, Sbaen a Ffrainc. Gellir gweld ei gwaith mewn nifer o gasgliadau cyhoeddus a phreifat, gan gynnwys Amgueddfa ac Orielau Cenedlaethol Cymru a Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru.
Mae'r gweithiau bywiog, egnïol a lliwgar yn yr arddangosfa hon yn dathlu gyrfa Mary mewn peintio. Erbyn hyn yn ei nawfed degawd, mae hi wirioneddol yn geidwad ei threftadaeth ddiwylliannol.
