Stephen West is an artist, sculptor, lecturer, curator and writer working from his home in Montgomeryshire. Born in 1952 in Henley-on-Thames UK, he has now lived in Wales for over 40 years.
Stephen trained as a painter at Reading College of Art, St Martins School of Art (he married fellow student Shani Rhys James whilst at St Martins) and the Royal College of Art, London. He has been a regular exhibiting artist and sculptor with several one-person shows and group shows such as 56 Group, Royal Cambrian Academy, National Eisteddfod of Wales, Jerwood Drawing Prize, Hunting/Observer prize exhibitions, Spectator/Adam prize exhibitions to name but a few. He is a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and has work in the collections of Oriel Môn Llangefni and Tabernacle Collection in Machynlleth.
Stephen creates art in a variety of forms, including painting, drawing, and sculpture. His pieces frequently focus on scenes from nature and provide snapshots of modern rural life. In his expansive assembled drawings, he features birds, animals, people, furniture, architecture, and elements of the natural environment—sometimes arranged in chaotic clusters, other times with a more poetic touch.
